Effects of glucose infusion on dog myocardial metabolism.

چکیده
OUR knowledge of the role of glucose in the metabolism of the heart in the whole animal appears to be restricted to its extraction from circulating blood and its effect on glycogen elevation, despite extensive studies in isolated tissue and organ preparations. In this study the myocardial ''.oritent of high energy phosphate compounds, estimated as acid-labile phosphate, was examined following infusion of glucose to the whole dog. In addition, the concentrations of inorganic phosphate, glycogen, lactate, potassium and sodium were determined. The possibility that glucose infusion may have a salutary effect on the metabolism of the coronary-occluded heart was also investigated.

T he oxidative metabolism of the human heart was first defined by Bing and colleagues 1 in a series of articles in the 1950s. Carbohydrates made up a relatively small part of the oxidative metabolism of the resting human heart. Focus on free fatty acids (FFAs) as a major myocardial fuel started with the finding in 1961 that FFAs inhibited glucose oxidation in the isolated heart. 2 The next year...

Physiol. 220(Z) : 499-506. 1971.-The effect of insulin on the activity of the glycogen-synthesizing and degrading enzymes was studied in serially collected biopsy samples of dog liver. In intact normal dogs infusion of glucose alone promoted activation of glycogen tra...

Aging is associated with decreases in aerobic capacity, cardiac function, and insulin sensitivity as well as alterations in myocardial substrate metabolism. Endurance exercise training (EET) improves cardiac function in a gender-specific manner, and EET has been shown to improve whole body glucose tolerance, but its effects on myocardial metabolism are unclear. Accordingly, we studied the effec...
متن کاملRegulation by insulin of myocardial glucose and fatty acid metabolism in the conscious dog.
In vivo small doses of insulin inhibit lipolysis, lower plasma FFA, and stimulate glucose disposal. Lowering of plasma FFA, either in the absence of a change in insulin or during combined hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, promotes glucose uptake by heart muscle in vivo. In the isolated perfused heart, large doses of insulin directly stimulate heart glucose uptake. To assess the effect of phys...
